Biography

Dr. Sophie Cai graduated at the top of her class from Harvard College with a degree in Chemistry and Physics. She completed her medical degree at Harvard Medical School, followed by an internship in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cai went on to complete her ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute (Johns Hopkins), where she received the Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence and W. Richard Green Housestaff Teaching Award. As a surgical retina fellow at the Duke Eye Center, she was the recipient of multiple awards including the Heed Fellowship, Duke School of Medicine Golden Apple Medical Student Teaching Award, and Duke Eye Center Best Research Presentation by Clinical Fellow Award.

Dr. Cai was selected to return to the Wilmer Eye Institute after her fellowship to serve as the Stephen J. Ryan Assistant Chief of Service and Associate Director of Ocular Trauma, in which role she supervised the training of Wilmer residents and fellows and was responsible for the care of hundreds of patients at Johns
Hopkins with open globe traumas, complex retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, and a broad spectrum of retina pathology.

She is excited to join Southeastern Retina Associates after serving for three years as an Assistant Professor at the Wilmer Eye Institute. She will be caring for patients in our Chattanooga and Georgia locations beginning June 17th.
